THE BEST DIET FOR HEALTH AND WEIGHT LOSS

It seems every day there’s a new study proclaiming which diet is best.  The latest research compares three of the most common diets- low-carb, low-fat and low-glycemic-index diets.  It found that the third type of diet is the best for losing weight and keeping it off without causing unwanted health side effects.  This diet, which is similar to the Mediterranean diet in that it focuses on fruit, vegetables, fish, nuts and whole grains, was also found to promote good cholesterol and lower peoples’ risk of diabetes and heart disease.   Low-fat diets caused the biggest decrease in energy expenditure (how many calories the body burns); people on such diets may be most likely to regain the weight they lose.  The low-carb diet was linked to the biggest increase in total energy expenditure, but also caused a spike in inflammation and hormones that may cause heart disease and diabetes.  Overall, experts say dieters should avoid restricting any major nutrients and instead focus on the quality of those nutrients.
