2/8: On this day, 1975, Bob Dylan went to #1 on the US chart with his 15th studio album Blood On The Tracks, his second US #1 album. The album has become one of Dylan's all-time best-selling studio releases, with a double-platinum US certification by the Recording Industry Association of America.

1920 or 1921- Actress Lana Turner (The Postman Always Rings Twice, Peyton Place) was born. (Most sources say she was born in 1920, but in her autobiography, Turner claimed she was one year younger than the records showed.) Turner died in 1995 at the age of either 74 or 75. 1925- Actor Jack Lemmon was born. He became famous in movies like Some Like it Hot and The Apartment, and won two Oscars for his roles in the films Mister Roberts and Save the Tiger. He died in 2001 at the age of 76. 1931- James Dean was born. He only made three movies (Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden and Giant) before he died in a car accident at the age of 24. 1976- Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver starring Robert DeNiro, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel and Jodie Foster opened at the Coronet Theatre in Los Angeles. 1990- The singer/songwriter known as Del Shannon - who had the No. 1 hit “Runaway” in 1961 - committed suicide at age 55. 1992- "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred peaked at #1 on the pop singles chart. 2005- The Doobie Brothers drummer Keith Knudsen died in Kentfield, Calif. of pneumonia at age 56. 2007- Model and tabloid sensation Anna Nicole Smith died at age 39 of an accidental drug overdose. 2010- Michael Jackson's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of the pop superstar in Los Angeles Superior Court. (Murray was convicted and sentenced to four years in jail.) |
